Insights and ideas that are truly transformational

Conversation Starter Questions

Making conversation is a piece of cake for some people. For others, it’s an art form – and a skill that we have to work to develop.

Here are a few questions you can ask to avoid those awkward conversational lulls. These questions tap deeper insights into a person’s character and can help get them talking. Often, that’s easier than trying to figure out what to say ourselves.

1. “If you were to visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?”
2. “If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?”
3. “What is your least favorite word?”
4. “What is your most favorite word?”
5. “Who was the worst boss you’ve ever had?” (You might not want to ask this one at work functions!)
6. “Who was the best boss you’ve ever had?”
7. “Where did you take your last vacation?
8. “Have you seen any good movies lately?”
9. “What’s your favorite book?”
10.  “What’s your favorite children’s book?”
11. “What did you do to celebrate your 21st birthday?
12. “What websites do you visit every day?”
13. “Have you ever misunderstood a song lyric or song title and been surprised to find you’ve been singing it wrong all along?”
14. “What was the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?”
And, finally, take one from Oprah:
15. “What do you know for sure?”

As you get deep into your conversations, keep a couple of general conversational guidelines in mind:
a. Keep it casual. Avoid bringing up politics, religion or other hotly debated topics.
b. Try to make things interesting and pleasant. Avoid talking about the weather. Inject some humor when you can.
